DG alumnae, DG family members and friends visited the Guide Dogs of Texas in San Antonio. We were introduced to several of their trained service dogs, provided a tour around the facility and shown how the service dogs are trained to help those who are blind. Steve, who is blind, offered a testimonial about his path to blindness and the freedom he now enjoys by having his dog Cody as his mobility companion: “I went from being overly dependent on my wife and friends to guide me through places to having the freedom to go whenever and wherever I want.”
The HDGF grant allocated to their facility by the HDGF this year appears to be funds well spent! This facility is considered small in comparison to other service dog facilities located in California and Florida, but this is the ONLY training facility in TEXAS!!!! They hope to grow larger and have satellite facilities across the state of Texas….Austin next year and then HOUSTON! What a great opportunity for the Houston Delta Gamma Foundation to finally have the opportunity to support a guide dog program IN HOUSTON!
Here are some pictures from our visit! If you have any questions about the Guide Dogs of Texas, please be sure to ask! They provided us with lots of information, so I’m sure the answer to your concern might be addressed there! If not, I now know who to contact!
